Although
bullfighting on foot was strictly forbidden during the Middle
Ages, popular games and tussles with bulls continued to be practised
in small towns and remote villages. The re-conquest of Spain
from Muslim rule and the re-population of new cities with more
permissive legislation led to the re-appearance of bullfighting
fairs in many places. Following the development of urban life
during the Renaissance, the art of bullfighting began to be
practised in the main cities.
