Favourable
circumstances as represented by Antonio Ordóñez
led in 1954 to the celebration of the 2nd Centenary of the birth
of Pedro Romero. For the occasion a goyesca bullfight was organised,
that is with the adornments, costume and apparatus typical of
the times of the Aragonese painter Francisco de Goya, a contemporary
of Pedro and his brother José Romero, whose portraits he
painted. The bullfight took place on 9 September with a programme
made up of Antonio Bienvenida, César Girón and Cayetano
Ordóñez, the eldest son of Niño de la Palma
and the person behind the initiative. Organised as a competition
of ranches, there were bulls belonging to Miura, Concha y Sierra,
Federico Bartolomé, Pablo Romero, Buendía and Francisco
Figueira. The bullfight opened with Antonio Bienvenida and the
Miura bull «Pajarraco». After an interval of two years,
similar bullfights took place in 1957 and 1958, this time with
the participation of Antonio Ordóñez. The driving
force behind the goyesca bullfights, he using his position as
impresario of the Ronda bullring to turn the event into one of
the annual highlights of the bullfighting season as well as a
great social and cultural occasion.

Nowadays
the goyesca costume bullfights are the highlight of the Pedro
Romero Fair that takes place each year at the beginning of September
in the Ronda bullring. Organised by Francisco Rivera Ordóñez,
in imitation of his grandfather as the impresario of the Ronda
ring, the fair also includes a traditional bullfight with lances
(rejones) and a bullfight without picadors for the pupils of schools
of bullfighting. An exhibition of carriages, organised by the
Royal Club of Carriages of Andalusia, Ronda Town Council and the
Real Maestranza de Caballería of Ronda, is the wonderful
final touch of the festivities held annually in the Ronda bullring.
